This project provides an opportunity to work directly with analogue materials and representations of the female body by female filmmakers with non-Western perspectives. I will first explore non-digitised works by pioneering Mexican female film and video artists in Mexico City, including Pola Weiss, Sarah Minter and Ximena Cuevas, and then expand the scope of my research to New York and Buenos Aires, where I will focus on the archives of Narcisa Hirsch. To access, preserve and contribute to the digitisation of these materials, I will participate in a workshop on film processing, archiving, restoration and scanning. The goal of the project is to create new pathways for the preservation and public engagement of female avant-garde film histories beyond the Western canon.
Dafna Narvaez Berlfein is a Berlin-based artist and researcher whose work explores avant-garde feminist filmmaking, queer underground contexts and experiences of uprootedness.
