On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile on 11 September 2023, Garraeud plans to create a cross-media installation, a non-linear narrative creatively intertwining the past and present. Using content from interviews and archival work, the installation will bring the audience closer to the international impact of the coup and the wounds caused by the tragic end of the 1000 days of the Allende government. Individual stories and personal testimonies from the Unidad Popular era are combined to form a commentary on current social conflicts. The centrepiece of the cross-media installation is a ‘memory machine‘ in the form of an armchair.
Álvaro Garreaud, born in Santiago de Chile in 1965, is a social anthropologist and visual artist. In memory projects, exhibitions and visual works, he creatively brings together artistic and social scientific perspectives.
