The fictional Institute for Post-Nationalist Technological Consciousness is active in specific fields to study the present growth and development of Indigenous technologies and intends to produce a speculative, poetic film of vignettes to show the institute’s work in the real world. As the institute’s Professor of Sonic Resonance, Duma will perform and score the scenes co-created for the film while studying the technology of sound making and trawling the thousands of recordings preserved since 1929 in the archives of the International Library of African Music. She aims to re-imagine sounds of the past in collaboration with a multicultural community of composers and educators. Much of the work of the project is dedicated to understanding how ritual, cultural and spiritual practices are tied to technical ones.
Gugulethu Duma (aka Dumama) is a music composer, storyteller and lyricist as well as a researcher of practice-based performance.
