In an ‘ecosophical’ mode of agriculture, grain is a companion species to humanity, with names, deities and spirits around which the village organizes itself. I will study community-controlled and biodiversity-based food systems by carrying out three interconnected projects. In Bengal, I will explore the tale of an ecological food table and experiment with vertical scrolls in collaboration with a local screen printer. Secondly, I will explore strategies that local women employ to secure food from uncultivated sources. In Bangladesh, I will examine rituals around Binni rice, which is socially and culturally essential to local communities. As some of these communities are disappearing, celebrating these rituals has become a form of resistance.
