This research project examines the composition of social bodies, the body politic and the notion of turning a body inside out. Focusing on the precapitalist early modern period, when consumption was more rooted in collective activity and more removed from the economic sphere, Chou will explore the playful and pleasurable space that foods and bodies once enjoyed. She will then attempt to draw a comparison between collective feasting of the past and digital activities of the present. Excrement circulates next to fibre optic cables in the sewers. Can the gut, then, be extended as a public space? How else can we think of digestion as a shared experience? And is the emergence of an alternate politics of life and living possible?
Sabrina Chou is a Taiwanese-American artist from Los Angeles, USA and is currently based in London.
