How can one achieve experimental composition while maintaining both one's culture and individuality? To pursue this question, Allami will study Arabic music fundamentals as set forth in the Great Book of Music by Al-Farabi (tenth century), specifically the chapters on the composition of rhythms and melodies that have never been sonically explored. Preliminary research has shown that there are generative and algorithmic ideas that lie within Al-Farabi’s methods. Translating these into a dynamic sequencer or generative system can be easily done with modern Web Audio and Web MIDI tools. This research will contribute to developing a unique notation system for experimental Arabic music as Anglo-European notation is not suitable. The goal will be to create scores for acoustic and electro-acoustic compositions independently.
