Sonya Hollowell

Sonya Holowell is a Dharawal woman, vocalist, composer and writer working across new and experimental genres. The contexts for her work, and the forms they take, are diverse and deeply questioning. Her practice comprises interdisciplinary collaboration, improvisation, multi-form writing and conceptual composition. She is also a workshop facilitator; a curator of the Now Now Festival; lecturer in experimental vocal practice; and a co-founder/editor of online arts publication ADSR Zine.

Sonya Holowell’s project comprised a 12-month period of artistic development. This began with a 2-month overseas trip to Canada and New York where she undertook an artist residency at the Banff Centre. Additional weeks overseas involved performances, attending numerous art galleries, museums and shows, and writing/editorial projects. While abroad she composed a work for which she was commissioned by the Song Company, she edited and released a bi-monthly edition of the Australian arts publication ADSR Zine and wrote an experimental work for this edition. In the 10 months since this trip, she has continued to build her practice. Projects have included managerial and curatorial work for ADSR Zine and the Now Now Festival, and the genesis of a new major project: a very personally-significant artistic undertaking, informed by the past year of invaluable experiences and opportunities for reflection.
